The very last, lazy days of summer . . .

. . . or, visual proof of what I am doing on my Labor Day weekend. Silly, I know, but it’s summer. As in the near-end of . . .

I am here in northern Vermont in a family summer house that has seen many generations. The above is a one-time find from my brother-in-law’s foray into organizing a closet crammed with, among other things, lakeside gear, an American flag, and something that might or might not be a set of silver balls for playing bocce. On this last point we cannot agree. (Update: a second set of bocce/not-bocce balls has now emerged.)

From what epoch in this cottage’s history does this handy gadget (see above) speak?

And does it ensure a perfectly bronzed pair of marshmallows for s’mores? Is a uniformly brown marshmallow preferred or is an irregular burn pattern the real thing of beauty? Would an upgraded version of this tool be battery-powered?

In any event, calling the Smithsonian . . .
