‘Tis (Still) the Season at the Hanover Inn

The holiday season’s not over yet. Still time to stroll the sidewalks of Hanover and duck into the lobby of the Hanover Inn to take in the annual winter display. Always captivating, this entire village constructed of sweet stuff. Here are the details:

A fellow viewer cajoled a teenaged daughter, reminding her of their making gingerbread houses at home through the years. “Such fun,” the mother insisted aloud. To me she turned and added “Such stress.” It brought back memories of my own mother, baking long into the night at Christmas time. We women and men are nothing if not heroic in our yearly holiday pursuits and traditions.

If your own gingerbread constructions did not fare so well—frosting turning out to be of insufficient mortar quality, gumdrops too heavy to stick to the roof, not enough Hershey’s kisses because you’d eaten most of them—fear not. It’s time to stand back and appreciate how the professionals bring this kind of magic.

Best wishes for the new year!

An unrelated note: Northern Stage just announced that it has added another performance of The Railway Children due to popular demand: a matinee on Friday, December 30 at 2:00 p.m. For a recent review of this production, please click here.
